Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi expressed on Friday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's anticipated visit to Manipur should have occurred two years ago. He emphasized that this visit should now be viewed as the beginning of a long journey towards restoring peace in the state.
Speaking at an event, the Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha remarked, 'We cannot claim that the situation in Manipur has returned to normal... there is no elected government in place.'
Gogoi stated that Modi's visit marks merely the start of a lengthy process aimed at reinstating peace, justice, reconciliation, and democracy in Manipur.
He further noted that until the relationships among the people of Manipur improve and their aspirations are met, it is hoped that the BJP will recognize that the Prime Minister's visit is not a final solution but rather a belated initiation.
He reiterated that this visit should have taken place two years ago and acknowledged that many challenges still lie ahead. The Assam Congress President added, 'As the saying goes, delay in justice is akin to denial of justice; the people of Manipur have been deprived of the Prime Minister's visit for a long time.'
Gogoi expressed hope that upon his arrival, the Prime Minister would first apologize to the people of Manipur for not visiting in the past two years. He made these comments during a media interaction alongside B. Sudarshan Reddy, the vice-presidential candidate of the 'India' alliance.
Gogoi mentioned that Reddy, being a former Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court, is well-acquainted with the conditions in Assam and other northeastern states.
